Su 57 Felon - Technically, DIRCM appears on other turbine aircraft. Before the Su-57, it was not seen in anything other than heavy transport and helicopters.

The Sukhoi Su-57 (NATO reporting name: Felon) is a twin-engine multirole fighter aircraft developed by Sukhoi. It is a product of the PAK FA ("prospective aviation complex of the forward air force") program, which was launched in 1999 as a more modern and cost-effective alternative to the Mikoyan project 1.44/1.42. Sukhoi's internal designation for the aircraft is T-50. The Su-57 is the first stealth technology aircraft in service with the Russian military and is intended to be the backbone of a stealth fighter family.

Capable of striking in the air, as well as on land and sea, the Su-57 multipurpose fighter combines stealth, supermaneuverability, supercruise, integrated avionics and significant internal payload capacity. The aircraft is expected to replace the MiG-29 and Su-27 in Russian military service and has also been sold for export. The first prototype aircraft flew in 2010, but the program will be long-term due to various design and technical problems encountered during testing, including the destruction of the first production aircraft before delivery. After several delays, the first Su-57 entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) in December 2020. The service life of the fighter is expected to be up to 35 years.

Interesting features of the Su-57, which are not found in any other combat aircraft, are the longitudinally placed internal weapons and the 101KS-O DIRCM (directed infrared countermeasures).

The Su-57 DIRCM consists of two laser-emitting turrets, one behind the cockpit on the dorsal side and the other under the cockpit on the ventral side.

"Technically, this feature is seen in other turbine-powered aircraft," said Connor Dalton, aircraft and incident researcher at Quora Airlines. "Until the Su-57, it was not seen in anything other than heavy transport and helicopters.

The DIRCM consists of two laser-emitting turrets, one behind the cockpit on the dorsal side and the other under the cockpit on the ventral side. The function of the system is relatively correct. When an infrared missile is detected, the lasers quickly target the missile's seeker, disabling it and preventing it from entering the target aircraft.

"The fact is that the system has not been seen before outside of vehicles and helicopters, and in the past was only deployed on the belly side as a defense against MANPADS."

“So being mounted on the back of a fighter jet means that this is not only the first DIRCM system on a fighter jet, but also one of the first DIRCM systems designed to combat air-to-air missiles. .'

Russia Releases Images Of Second Series Production Su 57 Stealth Fighter

There are several "holy graces" for Western aircraft watchers and photographers. Sukhoi's new Su-57 "5th generation" fighter, recently named "Felon" by NATO [this was officially confirmed to us by the NATO Allied Air Command], has undoubtedly become one of the "gray" aircraft for photographers.

Earlier this year, he spent two weeks in Russia with the new Sukhoi Su-57 at the MAKS 2019 air show. This author became one of the very few Westerners to "fly" an aircraft in the Sukhoi virtual reality flight simulator at MAKS.

The Su-57 seen at MAKS 2019 has three different paint schemes, two of which wear the most common pixel camouflage.

First, the Su-57 cockpit is very easy to learn. Although I was only allowed to perform basic flight maneuvers in the simulator and was not allowed to ask questions about the aircraft systems, it was very easy to learn the aircraft at a basic level. Observing the flight instruments and using the flight controls was intuitive, even for the average general aviation pilot. The Su-57 uses a center stick, unlike the US F-35 and F-22, which both have side sticks. For me, the center stick remains a bit ergonomic. Its added advantage is that it can be operated with either hand or with both hands. The throttles on the Su-57 are large and easy to control either synchronously or asymmetrically.

Sukhoi Su 57

The Su-57 flew at MAKS 2019 in a variety of programs, including exciting combat simulations, impressive formation flights and, most importantly, aerobatic displays by Sukhoi's leading pilots, including Hero of the Russian Federation and test pilot Sergey Bogdan.

Arguments over capabilities and performance (and actual "generation") aside, there's no denying that the Su-57 demos at MAKS 2019 were a photographer's dream. All of the Su-57 flights had great lighting from the cross photo platform, different flight patterns and directions for each day of the show, including training days, as well as creating a variety of photos. At MAKS 2019, aerial photography, taxiway and static terrain viewing capabilities were also great for the Su-57.

Unlike what was demonstrated by the US F-22 demonstration team, no one was seen inside the Su-57's internal weapons bay, which houses exposed weapons.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia plans to purchase 76 Sukhoi Su-57 Felons by 2028. A new contract for the purchase of additional aircraft was signed in July 2019. This contradicted the Russian Ministry of Defense's announcement that it would not be able to enter full-scale production of the program at the end of 2018. According to a July 30, 2019 article in The Diplomat by journalist Franz-Stefan Gadi,
